City Church Fort Wayne renovated the former Scott’s grocery store on the south side of Fort Wayne for their growing community, and DANCER polished the concrete floors in the central lobby and gathering space. We installed our StrongTread Polish – Remodel in the space, which included extensive patching and grinding to level the floor.
Before JCPenney became a successful retail store in the early 1900s, James Cash Penny was under apprenticeship and worked at a small goods store called Johnson and Callahan.
Mr. Johnson and Mr. Callahan took Jim on a buying trip to meet a vendor in New York.
That night alone in his room, James took samples he received from the vendor, washed them in the sink, and hung them up to dry. Mr. Callahan, when seeing this, asked James, “What under the sun are you doing?
James replied, “I must find out whether these goods are colorfast.”
“James, you heard me ask the man on that very point! He said these are colorfast.”
“Mr. Callahan, I have to tell the customers that the colors are fast. Before I can tell them, I must know for myself. Why else should customers trust what I tell them?”
Mr. Callahan shook his head at James. “If you spend time doing things like this, you’ll never get to be a big merchant.”
But James thought differently. He thought that he must first be a good merchant. If he focused on his craft, the rest would care for itself. His skills as a merchant would never outpace his integrity for great products.
James spent his time ensuring his word to his customers was good. He was not sharing something from another person; he knew the fabrics from experience. That’s the Responsibility to Customers.
