Utilizing a basement space can add a whole new living or recreation area to a home. That is exactly what these homeowners wished to do with their basement remodel. By transforming their basement, their entire family can now enjoy a living area, dining area, play space, restroom, and kitchen area. When thinking about flooring for these multi-use spaces, polished and stained concrete ticked all of the boxes for design and style, durability, simple maintenance, and adding warmth to the space.
The original flooring in this space was carpet. This is important to note because there were tack strip holes left around the edges of the basement. To solve this issue while still making the space aesthetically pleasing, we proposed a 6″ concrete overlay along the perimeter of the space. This border would be stained a little bit darker than the rest of the floor to make it stand out. The overlay was also applied in the restroom and closets in the basement.
The attention to aggregate exposure was especially important for this project because the owners wished to have great movement in the floor once the stain was applied. The aggregate was ground to a mixture of Cream and Salt + Pepper to let the stain’s marbleization really stand out. The Wenge Wood reactive stain that was applied to this floor creates a warm yet subtle color to compliment other warm tones in the space. The floor was polished to a 200-grit, Satin finish to produce a soft sheen.
